Tedx Speaker
Hi, I’m Pralav Dhyani - author, maritime professional, entrepreneur, and someone who’s spent the last decade turning and unimaginable experience into a story worth sharing.
Today, I live in Dubai where I run a maritime business, named after my mother’s initials - a tribute to the woman who has shaped me. When I’m not working, I’m usually camping with my family, playing fetch with my golden retriever, or chasing weekend cricket matches.
Hijacked is my first book — a personal story, yes, but also a universal one about resilience, hope, and what it really means to begin again. Being held in captivity for 331 days, at the young age of 21, was a life altering experience. However, that didn’t define me - it became the foundation on which I rebuilt.
This story is not just of survival, but also of everything that comes after. I hope to continue telling stories that matter - the kind that open conversations around survival, mental health, and navigating life after trauma - not from a pedestal, but as someone who’s lived it.

Ishika Gupta2025-05-14 A book that left me both shaken and deeply moved I picked up Hijacked because I’ve been wanting to read more nonfiction this year and what a powerful addition it’s been to my shelf! From the very first chapter, I was drawn into the unimaginable ordeal of a 21-year-old seafarer who, along with his crew, was held hostage by Somali pirates for 331 long, terrifying days aboard the RAK Afrikana. This is not just a story of survival — it’s a raw, unflinching account of what it means to endure. The fear, the hunger, the despair, and the emotional toll of captivity are described with such honesty that you can’t help but feel it all.The writing is simple and engaging, yet deeply impactful. Even someone with no maritime background, like me, can grasp the ship’s workings and the constant danger the crew faced — thanks to the author’s clear, accessible style. What makes this story truly unforgettable is how human it is. There are no grand embellishments or dramatic flourishes. Just the truth — steady, painful, and powerful. The pain and anxiety endured by the family members and loved ones is unimaginable! The author doesn't position himself as a hero, but as a man who survived something that should never have happened. His vulnerability, his reflections, and his ultimate gratitude for life and family make this book so much more than a recounting of a hostage crisis.Captain Ram’s strength and leadership stood out as a beacon of hope, and the unbreakable bond between the crew members — forged through fear and uncertainty — is a testament to human resilience. At its heart, Hijacked is a story about courage, faith, and the quiet but relentless power of hope. It made me reflect on what truly matters, and how strength sometimes looks like simply holding on, one day at a time.Last but not least, the cover — simple yet striking — perfectly captures the essence of the book and its powerful theme. It is a fitting reflection of the book’s profound and gripping theme.Whether you’re curious about life at sea, drawn to real-life survival stories, or just want to read something that will stay with you long after the last page — this book is worth every minute Padmajha Suresh2025-05-12 A story of survival The experience of a 21 year old Deck officer aboard the ship MV RAK Afrikana is truly a tale of survival spirit and resilience.Freshly trained , Pralav embarks on his voyage as a deck officer of the cargo merchant vessel. What was anticipated as a learning experience turned nightmarish when their ship got hijacked by Somali pirates. The hardships faced by the crew during their period of captivity makes this memoir nerve wrecking.THe author has narrated the story in a personal and candid manner where the horrors of his capture can be experienced by the readers as well. The dream job of serving on a cargo vessel can prove hauntingly dangerous as is evident from this story. The story narrates the extent of human cruelty and violent nature as well as shows the limits of human endurance and perseverance. The author has bared all in this tale. From the fear to the tension to brotherhood between the crew members , this tale is a deep dive into the expanse of human behaviour. The events that unfolded on the ship have been portrayed in raw manner. The narration is bone chilling and displays the chaotic nature of the nautical realm. The uncertainty lies not only with nature but also with humans.A real life thriller with real characters who portrayed the real power of the human soul. An engaging and inspiring tale of a true survivor. Chaotic2025-05-12 A tale of survival in the worst of situations 331 days in captivity. One unforgettable story of courage.Just finished Hijacked by Pralav Dhyani and I’m blown away. This is a gripping first-hand account of how the author survived 331 days on a hijacked ship, held hostage by Somali pirates. The writing is crisp and straight to the point, making you feel every moment of fear, uncertainty, and courage. At just 21, Pralav and his crew endured nearly a year of fear, mock executions, and isolation.I could vividly imagine what he must have gone through. It is intense, raw, and deeply moving.More than just a survival story, Hijacked is a powerful reminder of the human spirit, resilience, and the unbreakable bond of team spirit. Shreya verma2025-05-06
